At $200, it automatically prices out many - but certain travelers may find the cost justified. Today I'll outline three reasons why this may be the case for your next vacation.
Few things in travel - or life, for that matter - are guaranteed. But InterContinental does just that, stating in their terms & conditions that, "A room one category higher than purchased will be assigned upon check-in to InterContinental Ambassadors."
This isn't revolutionary by any means, as IHG Platinum Elite status will grant an upgrade upon availability. But the guarantee takes all doubt out of the equation. By booking the highest category before a suite, for example, travelers can ensure the entire duration of their trip will be in a suite - at a fraction of the cost.
Free Weekend Certificate
I am usually quite averse to a certificate that requires any type of payment. But luxury travelers may find the free weekend certificate to be of great value, especially combined with the guaranteed upgrade already mentioned.
By paying one weekend night at any InterContinental property worldwide and redeeming this certificate, an InterContinental Ambassador member will automatically receive a second weekend night. A member of the program receives a certificate every year of membership, but they expire 12 months after issuance.
At $200, the second weekend night would be an immense discount for certain InterContinental properties, like the InterContinental Amstel in Amsterdam that goes for over $700 a night. Depending on your travel plans, using this benefit along with the upgrade could be a major steal.
For lack of a better term, I'll consider the third benefit to be "everything else." This includes financial benefits like reduced pricing for two occupants (when a hotel charges for two persons, which is rare), complimentary water, fruit and a free paid movie.
It also includes the more qualitative benefits to enhance your stay. These include premium check-in, late checkout up to 4pm, a complimentary newspaper and a "gift" upon arrival. Individually, these benefits are minor but they add up to an exceptional experience.
The InterContinental Ambassador program isn't for everyone. But for those that are likely to stay at a pricey InterContinental property in the next 12 months, it can make sense both financially and to enhance your next vacation.
