Silvercar offers a strikingly good car rental service, especially for the under 25 years old segment. After recently lowering the minimum driving age to 22 years old (when the car is picked up, not initial reservation), plus a unique, agent-free pickup experience and phone app to unlock the car, pay the cost and receive a receipt, Silvercar is an absolute must for the under 25 segment.
Silvercar is a three-year-old company based in Austin, Texas, beginning to redefine the car rental experience. They are doing this by eliminating steps and uncertainty. For example, every car is an Audi A4 - no matter what. So no more wondering if your car "upgrade" will be a red Mustang or white minivan.
The company also offers fixed pricing - $89 for a weekday and $59 on weekends. While this is nowhere near the cheapest you can find on the surface, the lack of additional charges and premium Audi vehicle make it a strong competitor. Local fuel prices for filling up the gas tank upon return, for example, and no fees for a second driver.
Airport Locations & Experience
If you couldn't tell, the company is keen on simplicity. Currently available at nine airports, shown below, Silvercar has largely revamped the airport car rental experience in these locations.
- Austin (AUS)
- Chicago (ORD) *Coming soon*
- Dallas (Love)
- Dallas (DFW)
- Denver (DEN)
- Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
- Los Angeles (LAX)
- Miami (MIA)
- Phoenix (PHO)
- San Francisco (SFO)
Let me walk you through my experience. When you arrive at the airport, press a button on the phone app to be picked up (within minutes, truly). This is a little more personalized than the scheduled bus service that most car rental companies offer at airports - simply walk out of arrivals and press the button.
Once you are at the Silvercar lot, walk up to your vehicle and, again using the app, unlock your predetermined Audi A4. Drive unlimited mileage within the continental U.S. and, like I mentioned before, don't worry about a second driver or a huge fill-up charge upon return.
Finally, upon return, park the car in their lot and you are good to go - a receipt will be emailed to you within a few hours of drop-off. While the Hertz and Avis' of the world have improved dramatically with the checkout process, I still prefer this mobile-friendly process over the formers.
While car rental credit cards do exist, they really aren't worth your valuable applications. And because I can probably count my car rental good experiences on one hand, there is room for improvement in this integral part of traveling.
If you are flying to one of the above nine airports and appreciate Audi vehicles, give Silvercar a try and let me know your experience. It isn't the cheapest, but might be the best car rental experience you'll have.
