These websites have helped me find some great restaurants in otherwise difficult places. I use all 6 because the degree of helpfulness depends on the city. In other words, some of these sites have more information on certain cities than others. I have outlined how these sites are most useful and what I like and dislike about them.
While they are most helpful for narrowing down my restaurant search, I have learned that ultimately the best way to find good food is trial and error. That is why I dedicate so many posts to reviewing restaurants I find. Sometimes you can find great things on menus of restaurants that do not necessarily market themselves as organic or vegan also.
1. Happy Cow:
Good for: Vegetarian, vegan, and organic restaurant scouting
Less good for: Finding gluten free and good quality. Sometimes all that exists are low quality Chinese buffets
*I highly suggest investing (a very small amount) in the Happy Cow app that allows you to find heathy restaurants near your location. It has been a lifesaver!*
Good for: Organic restaurants
Less good for: Gluten free and vegan - although these often go hand in hand with organic. Also the site is still developing so some big cities have yet to be posted.
Good for: Finding overall good restaurants. Use this as a start to looking at menus with potential healthy options rather than full blown organic restaurants.
Less good for: Vegetarian/vegan and organic specific restaurants. Also depends on the region as tourist interest and demographic varies and locals do not typically rate restaurants within their region. Because it is focused on travel experience, other factors go into the review of restaurants rather than food quality alone.
Good for: Countries outside US. You can find things that would never exist on other platforms like Tripadvisor and Yelp. Used by locals.
Less good for: This is hit or miss simply because not enough people use it that are into healthy eating as it is not geared toward this niche.
Good for: Outside the USA, South America especially. Can find specific vegetarian and organic restaurants through this and is used by locals. Solely dedicated to food.
Less good for: Everywhere else
Good for: The United States - great for the United States in fact
Less good for: just about everywhere else. People don't seem to use it in the countries I visited. Look out for 5 stars with a small number of actual reviews - usually its just friends/family of the restaurant.
